The Setup

Let’s take the family on a long-promised ski trip over the holidays. They still get snow in Utah, right? We know it won’t be cheap. Holiday pricing is 3-4x typical rates. Park City is notorious for being both expensive and sold out over Christmas and New Year’s if you wait too long. Especially if you’re looking for a larger property.

Our Recommendation

We found a few excellent, available, and “reasonably”-priced locations. Our recommendation is Moose Lodge Retreat below. See the full Live Steal here.

The Search

All our lodging databases can provide accommodations for a two week vacation. So we’ll check Hotels and Resorts, Weekly Resorts and Condos, and Homes and Villas.

We searched for 2 bedrooms in Park City, Utah for two weeks from December 20 to January 3 for a family of 4. We’ll find the best deal that encompasses quality lodging and price. As always, all prices include taxes and on-site resort fees due on check-in.

Hotels and Resorts

There are 71 Park City hotels available during the holiday from $201 (studio) to $7,688 per night. We liked the 5* Sundial Lodge, Park City - Canyons Village. It’s a nicer property for about the same money as 3 and 4 star resorts and they still have rooms. The 2 bedroom condo lodge was $16,920 for the trip, a savings of $3,984 or 19% off the retail price of $20,904. That’s $1,208/day, an excellent option.

Weekly Resorts and Condos

Weekly properties are typically less expensive than standard hotels but often don’t have the same amenities, such as on-site restaurants, spa, and gym.

We have 33 resorts in Utah. There is a 2 bedroom at the 3* Marriott’s MountainSide at Park City. It features an amazing special price if you’re flexible - $879 for 2 bedrooms Nov. 15-20. That’s just before the ski resort typically opens.

The holiday period price is $15,410 or $1,100 per night.

Homes and Villas

The best value will come from our selection of 117 exclusive homes and condos. There are 29 homes with 2 or more. We liked the 4* Moose Lodge Retreat condo in Park City for $16,683 for $1,191 per night. It’s a 30% savings or $7,149 off the retail price of $23,382. Just walk to the Slopes with a free Park City bus 100 feet from the building to take you to shopping and restaurants.

Veteran cruisers fly in the day before their cruise departs. What do they know that you don’t?

1. Cruise check-in times are early. You often have to be onboard no later than 2pm. It’s not like a hotel where you can arrive at any time of the day. Passengers have to be checked in, cleared through US Coast Guard and Customs manifests, and go through required safety drills before it can leave while the port is still operational.

2. The cruise schedule is inflexible. Ships maintain a tight schedule that manages not just passenger embarkation, but also port and infrastructure availability and the delivery of 150 to 400 tons of food, beverages, and general provisions. They can’t put all of that on hold for little old you.

3. 23% of flights are delayed. 4% more than 2 hours.

4. The math is painful. Yes, the chance a flight problem causes you to miss embarkation is small. But the cost is HUGE. Your only recourse is to fly to the first port, pay for hotels, transportation, and meals, and meet the ship when it arrives, which can cost thousands of dollars

5. It’s not just the cost. Consider the emotional toll. Your frustration and anger at missing embarkation, spending hours planning alternative travel, rushing around to take taxis, fly, and eat. Miss a day or two of your cruise and you’ve ruined a good part of your vacation.

6. You don’t win either way. If you do make the cruise, do you really want to wake up at 3 am to take that 6am flight so you can land, wait for baggage claim, and take Uber from the airport to the port in time for embarkation? You had little sleep. You’re dead tired. You don’t enjoy your first day. You’ve still essentially lost a day of the cruise.

7. Long flight? Multiple time zone changes are vacation day killers. You need at least a day to adjust to the new time. Get a full night of sleep at the departure port so you’ll feel refreshed before you step onto the ship.

8. Recover from other emergencies. You need a buffer too. If you’ve traveled enough, you know that there WILL be a problem. Maybe you’ll make your embarkation. But you forgot a swimsuit, medication, baby pacifier, sunscreen, toiletries, or specific snacks. The airline loses your bag and needs a day to deliver it. You need to buy the two bottles of wine or soda near the airport that the cruise ship allows. Arriving the day before gives you the time you need so you’re fully ready.

9. Start your vacation relaxed. You’re on a vacation. The solution is simple. Fly in a day early. Stroll into embarkation fresh, stress-free, and ready for lunch onboard and a great day.

1. A cabin just for you. Many cruise lines now offer dedicated solo cabins. You don’t have to find roommates or pay for a larger room. See our rundown of cruise lines and single support at bottom.

2. Booking solo. Solo cabins are limited and sell out fast. Avoid the high season and don’t wait to put down a deposit.

3. Booking standard. If you can’t get a solo cabin or miss a solo promotion, wait until 60 days or less before sailing. If ships aren’t full, they’ll start discounting cabin rates and may waive all or part of the single supplement.

4. Single discounts. Cruise lines may offer reduced single supplements (the amount over the per-person price ). Instead of paying for two in a cabin, a single supplement may be 50% (not 100%) or less.

5. Convenient socializing: In addition to a variety of bars, ships host mixers, singles meetups, and group trivia games that make meeting people easy.

6. Safe Environment: Gated ship security allows solo travelers to explore and relax with peace of mind.

7. No Planning Stress: Your lodging, transport, and meals are bundled together, so you do not have to stress over daily logistics.

8. Group Excursions: Guided shore tours let you explore foreign ports alongside other travelers who share your interests.

They do a great job of listing the latest deals and getting the facts to help you avoid mistakes, save money, and be the best prepared on your next cruise.

My first ship gym on Carnival Cruise Line Conquest was a pleasant surprise - excellent equipment similar to my gym at home, wonderful view, almost no wait during the peak morning workout hours. The Celebration would be even better as a new ship, right?

Wrong. Sadly they de-emphasized it in their design. The equipment is comparable. But the workout area is about the same size. The number of passengers is 80% more. So a fair number of passengers are having to wait for equipment and complaining about it in cruise forums. Also, you still see the ocean. But the panoramic view from the top rear of the Conquest is gone.

If you regularly like to work out like me, this is important. It’s bad enough I gain 5 pounds each sailing because of all the great food onboard. But it would surely be 10 if I couldn’t hit the weights and treadmill most days. I wouldn’t pay $500 more for a cruise with a great gym, but it would help me make a decision if the cruise lines, ships, and itineraries I’m considering were otherwise comparable.

I checked to see if there is any website that compares cruise gyms and fitness areas. There isn’t. So my trusty AI and I will add that to our development list.

We did a test case for the two ships above, scoring the gym with subjective ratings and objective counts for space and equipment. We hope our readers will contribute their ratings and experiences after we’re set up.

They call it a vacation club these days. Don’t fall for it.

It’s just marketing.

In a traditional timeshare you get a deeded right to use a specific property for a set week each year. People found it to be limiting. “Timeshare” earned the industry a bad reputation due to an inflexible product, financial traps, and high-pressure sales.

So they put lipstick on the pig. They started with a more pleasant name. Calling the product a vacation club lowers the buyer’s natural defenses. It’s not a nasty timeshare. It’s a fun club like a gym membership that you think you can easily quit.

The product was repackaged. Vacation clubs are more flexible than timeshares. They’re a points-based membership that lets you book different resorts within a network.

But the timeshare structure, traps, and high-pressure sales remain as you’ll see in this series.

According to comprehensive studies by the Better Business Bureau (BBB), thousands of consumers annually report feeling intentionally misled by these exact rebranding tactics, finding themselves trapped in expensive travel contracts they never would have signed had they known it was simply a traditional timeshare in disguise.

I bought a timeshare. There. I admitted my mortal sin to the whole world. Or at least my mom and the three people who receive our blog.

I’ve told many people never to do it. I write here about taking the time to be a Smart Travel Consumer. I’ve warned you in these same pages to be very afraid of resort tours, which have their own circle of hell. And then I pull the same shit and do it myself. Not a proud moment.

I could say that I did it in the name of science. To go through the full process from tour to owner to unit manager so that I could have personal experience, be better educated (expensive lesson!), and more effectively warn you. I have sinned. Learn from my bad example. But that’s not true.

The impetus for the purchase was simple. I’ve been vacationing in Mexico for a decade at all-inclusive 4* resorts for a week, spending $2,500-$3,500 each time. So this was just doing more of the same. It would be nice to not have to think about it anymore, to know that I’d pay something upfront and in exchange get more for less. I’d get more - an even better resort. I’d get it for less - I would save several hundred dollars per year. I’d break even on the purchase and annual maintenance fees after several years of savings. Logical, right?

Of course this is exactly what they sell and why 95% of buyers buy.

I’ve been to 20 such resort tours. But this time certain personal factors converged to fan this idea into a flame. And I bought.

Days later … “No plan survives first contact with the enemy,” which in this case is reality.

I count the purchase as the worst decision of my life. Now I know I’ll savage something so that it’s not a huge loss. Meanwhile, I’m starting this series to show the hundreds — if not thousands — of ways these deals are evil and why you should, seriously, stay away, even if I ultimately didn’t.

In our article ✈️ Basic Economy Airfare we asked Is it Economic and Should you CFAR? I.e. buy travel insurance with a CFAR (Cancel For Any Reason) add-on.

We clarified a few things based on your feedback.

• We recommended travel insurance for cruises because medical expenses are extremely expensive onboard and not covered by normal insurance. Even though the probability of an accident is very low, the expected net cost of having to file a claim is comparable to the cost of the insurance. Plus there are other insurance benefits like trip cancellation, baggage delay or loss, etc. We didn’t look at the value of the CFAR (Cancel For Any Reason) insurance add-on and will do so in a future post.

• Airlines don’t provide a financial incentive to cancel a Basic Economy ticket. Most people simply don’t show up at the airport because they’re going to lose what they paid regardless. The airline industry average for no-shows is 10%. We had a solid guess in our article because that was the rate we had used.

• We added a second lower cancellation rate of 4% to compare Basic Economy Ticket options.

• If that lower rate makes sense to you or you accept the risk of eating the occasional ticket, book Basic Economy. It’s the clear economic winner.

• If you prefer the safety of lower risk or expect higher cancellations, then the top three options are all good economic choices, whether you buy the Basic Economy ticket, take the Main Cabin upgrade, or add CFAR travel insurance.

Nothing is guaranteed in life except death and taxes. This includes personal travel plans. Basic economy fares seem like a huge risk. You lose your entire payment if you can’t make the flight, which may be a few weeks or even months away. What do you do when you have to keep down travel costs but need flexibility?

Previously we recommended travel insurance for cruises. The typical cost for a $5,000 trip (cruise + airfare) for 2 for a week is $250 for travel insurance or 5% of total cost. Medical expenses are extremely expensive onboard and not covered by normal insurance. Even though the probability of an accident is very low, the expected net cost of having to file a claim is comparable to the cost of the insurance. Plus there are other insurance benefits

We didn’t look at the value of the CFAR (Cancel For Any Reason) insurance add-on for a cruise and will do so in a future post. It’s about $125 or 2.5% of total cost.

Today we focus on air travel and those nasty non-refundable basic economy fares. We wonder if CFAR insurance is a smart way to hedge against the possibility of losing your entire, albeit cheap, airfare.

Travel insurance typically covers sudden, unforeseen events that disrupt your trip, including trip cancellations due to sudden sickness, severe weather, or a family emergency. But life is more complicated than that. Maybe you have a big project for work, your mom suddenly announced she will be visiting from Boca, or you realize that Saturn is going to be squaring the moon.

CFAR is an add-on that lets you cancel your trip for any, including personal, reason. It typically reimburses 50% to 75% of your prepaid, non-refundable expenses, provided you buy the insurance within 14 to 21 days of your initial trip payment and cancel at least 48 hours before departure.

Note that your expense has to be a total loss. CFAR will not pay when the airline issues you a credit.

Let’s make some assumptions so we can look at the economics. Suppose that the basic airfare is $1,000 for your traveling party. Our CFAR policy will cost about $100 (or 10% of your trip cost) and cover 75% of a loss.

Airlines don’t provide a financial incentive to cancel a Basic Economy ticket. Most people simply don’t show up at the airport because they’re going to lose what they paid regardless. The airline industry average for no-shows is 10%. We’ll use that as a high percentage proxy for cancellation rates. We’ll also look at a low cancellation rate of 4% (one out of 25).

Here are your options and high and low average net loss.

1. $100/$40 - Do nothing. One time you’ll lose the entire purchase of $1,000. But this is spread across all the other flights where there is no other cost.

2. $125/$110 - CFAR hedge. You pay for the insurance policy on every trip and lose $250 on the canceled flights.

3. $150/$150 - Buy the airline upgrade, credit refund. Airlines also provide a ticket refund option for airline credit, which typically is $100 less than the cash refund below.

4. $250/$250 - Buy the airline upgrade, cash refund. The average premium for a typical Main cabin ticket over Basic Economy is $250 with cancellation with cash refund. This is a significant hike in the ticket cost, but also typically includes seat selection and other benefits.

Recommendation

Your choice depends on your preference for ease of mind and risk tolerance. I’ve only had 2 times during my life where I had to cancel or no show and lost my ticket payment. The low cancellation rate is based on that. But you may prefer ease of mind and the safety of insurance.

High risk. If you’re like me and accept the risk of eating the occasional ticket, book Basic Economy. It’s the clear economic winner.

Low risk. The top three options are in the same net loss territory and are all good economic choices.

1. Buy the Basic Economy ticket, especially if the trip is soon, or the travel is a virtual certainty. It’s still the lowest net loss option.

2. If you normally buy Main Cabin, which includes seat selection, regularly fly that airline and will accept a credit, or will pay a little extra for an easy and safe choice, then buy the Main Cabin upgrade.

3. For all other cases, consider the Basic Economy ticket with CFAR travel insurance. It provides peace of mind and includes travel insurance for flight, medical, and baggage emergencies. The downside is the hassle - you have to source and buy the insurance product and occasionally go through their claims process.

Cruises

The cruise line oligopoly enforces strict price parity to prevent heavy price discounting. So fares run in a narrow range among cruise sellers. In this tight industry Vacation Steal prices are 5-27% lower than other sales channels.

Resorts and Hotels

Hotel room prices don’t have the forced price protection of cruise cabins. Heavy discounts are possible. Whereas the cruise line suppliers limit retail price, it’s the sellers limiting competition in the hotel market. Booking Holdings and Expedia Group own most major web sites. 1. Be Wilson. Wilson the Castaway volleyball wasn’t talking and so shouldn’t you. Don’t assume. Be polite. Be discreet. Respect participants … and non-participants. A good policy for partnering … and life.

2. They’ve got a cruise for that. Of course they do. There are nude, lifestyle, music, and other themed voyages chartered by specialty companies. Visit Bliss, Temptation, and Desire Cruises for adult cruises.

3. Solo cruising. Cruises are increasingly single-friendly to the point of building more cabins for one. Many ships schedule solo-traveler gatherings, meetups, dance classes, and hosted bar events.

4. Mainstream cruising. Your chances of meeting singles and hooking up are best on adults-only cruise lines like Virgin Voyages, Viking Cruises, and Oceania Cruises, and sailings like Carnival Cruise Line SEA.

5. Avoid the kids. Other mainstream cruises will be freer and quieter when children are less likely to be on board. So sail during school terms and for a week or longer. Avoid holidays, Spring Break, the summer, and long weekends.

6. Top-down cruising in public … Topless sunbathing used to be common on cruise ships across the world, including the U.S. But the party is over. It is prohibited in public now, even on adults-only cruises. There are exceptions. Virgin Voyages allows it on The Perch on Deck 17. In Europe, a number of cruise lines, including Viking Cruises, Oceania Cruises, and Costa Cruises have topless decks or areas, as well as specialized clothing-optional charters.

7. … and private ... Mainstream cruise lines prohibit nude sunbathing on balconies where you can be seen by others, including other balconies, the ship, or the port. It’s generally ok if it’s truly private. But be aware there are cameras on the sides of the ship.

8. … but keep it down. While you can’t be seen by others on your balcony, you can be heard. So don’t get too frisky.

9. What’s with the upside-down pineapple? It’s the secret handshake of swingers. The sign can be found on cabin doors (though Carnival Cruise Line says they may remove it), clothing, jewelry, tattoos, etc. There are pineapple badges, pineapple-topped straws, and even pineapple necklaces and anklets.

10. Meet before the cruise. Users on dating apps like Feeld use the pineapple emoji. You can find other swingers in online communities like Adult Friendfinder, Reddit, and #swingtok.

11. Enjoy the casino. The casino is another way to have adult fun on the ship. Just don’t have too much fun because it’s certainly not an investment.

12. Remember that everyone carries a camera. A few too many cocktails can turn a silly pool-deck moment into somebody else’s viral video. A ship’s public area is no different from any land location. Don’t do anything that you wouldn’t want your mom or your boss to see.

13. Foreign pharma. International ports can save you a lot of money on medication that’s much more expensive in the U.S. But steer clear of illegal drugs, which ships take very seriously. This includes marijuana, and even CBD products, even if you have a legal prescription. Cruise ships operate on maritime law, not that of your home state or departure port. Just like when you’re flying, it’s safest to put drugs in labeled containers and have your doctor’s prescriptions with you.

14. The drinking age follows the sailing—not the horizon. Turning 18 does not automatically make alcohol legal once a ship reaches international waters. The minimum age depends on the cruise line, departure region, and destination. Royal Caribbean, for example, uses 21 on North American and Caribbean departures but 18 on many international departures. Check your line’s current written policy.

15. Lastly, a cruise is not a departure from reality. Keep naughty and risky behavior in your cabin. Fights, lewd behavior, throwing objects overboard, and boasting about smuggled items can trigger ship security, a timeout in the brig (yes, each ship has one), expulsion from the ship at the next stop, being put on the cruise line’s permanent no-sail list, and even fines and jail time.
