Cruise Myth: A cruise upgrade is valuable
You think an upgrade is an expensive stateroom promotion — like going from oceanview to a balcony — worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars. It’s not.
Fact
The cruise cabin upgrade you see in cruise line promotions normally refers to a higher category (assuming one is available) — not a higher cabin class. Typically the bump is insignificant. The room is the same size with the same amenities. You may be moved from Interior stateroom 4B to 4C. Often the upgraded room is one deck higher. But it also can be a cabin on the same deck but located closer to midship or otherwise rated marginally superior.
The rooms that you were upgraded from and to could truly (but typically aren’t) adjacent. The actual price difference of a category upgrade may be as little as $10. It’s hardly the valuable dream cabin you may have been hoping to land!
