Intro
Time to schedule our next cruise for sweetie’s birthday. She’ll be in Miami Sept. 17. That limits us to departure port and date. This MSC Cruises weeklong cruise incorporates a back-to-back. So there are limited ports and the younger crowd and family vibe of the shorter 3 and 4 night cruises is not ideal for us. But I wanted to try the line. It had the best price so we could fit in a second cruise this year.
Post Mortem
We were right to recommend Buy now. In fact we were too late ourselves!
There were cabins available when we started this post, but none when we tried to book 2 days later. That’s a clue. … The lack of cabins then continued for 5 days. There is limited availability now (June 3). But it’s unlikely to stay open for long.
Time to go to our next choice.
1. Historical prices
Chart from Vacations2Go
This chart is an excellent example of seasonal pricing. High summer pricing moderates later in the year.
Pricing over $1,000 indicates the class is essentially sold out.
2. Target sailing
The MSC Seaside leaves Sept. 21 from Miami for 7 nights. We’re focusing on Balcony pricing.
The chart covers 4.5 months of pricing from about Jan 15 to May 29. This period is 8.5 to 4 months before sailing.
The sailing experienced:
A significant price decrease on Feb 14, about 7 months before sailing.
A significant price decrease on March 19, about 6 months before sailing.
A small price increase on April 21, 5 months before sailing.
A small price increase on May 28, 4 months before sailing.
Inside cabins were effectively full in later March.
3. Comparison sailing
The June 15 sailing is the same ship and itinerary with the closest departure - 2 weeks - to the time of writing. It shows pricing 5 to .5 months before sailing.
The sailing experienced similar price decreases and a small price increase 4, 3, and 2 months before sailing.
Afterward pricing continued to increase and either cabin classes filled up or the price recovered to the prior level before the last price drop.
Analysis
Final payment date
The Final payment date for MSC Cruises is 90 days prior to sailing for a 7 night trip. The comparison sailing price decreased after this date.
Recommendation
Current price - $1,010 total (Balcony) - $144/night from Vacation Steal, 8% off retail.
The limited amount of history likely means these cruises were released for booking at the same time. The price decreases and increase also happened at about the same time in real-life and not at the same time as measured in time before sailing. The pricing for the same sailing in November also shows this timing and pattern. It appears that these price drops were cruise line-wide for this market, likely a general attempt to rebalance supply and demand.
I’d expect a sailing like this to be more difficult to book as a back to back. Passengers from the shorter cruises will book more overall different cabins, leaving fewer available for the entire 7 night duration of the combined sailing.
Buy now. If the target sailing continues to follow the comparison’s price trajectory, cabin classes will fill and/or prices will continue to increase.

All sailings are different. Pricing and availability can change for many reasons. The use of a comparison sailing is suggestive - not predictive - of a target sailing’s price trajectory.
